Spotlight on Acupuncture: Can it provide relief for anxiety?

Acupuncture is a well-known form of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) that has been around for centuries. The practice of inserting needles to stimulate “acupoints” in the body corrects imbalances in the flow of energy (Qi) affecting our internal organs and overall health and wellbeing.

People usually seek acupuncture treatment for physical ailments such as neck aches and backaches. However, recent studies have shown that acupuncture can have positive effects on mental health. Evidence from neuro-imaging and clinical trials show that acupuncture has great potential in alleviating or even preventing mental health problems, such as depression and anxiety.

How can acupuncture help anxiety?

Many people have turned to acupuncture treatments to help boost their body’s own ability to heal itself and restore balance. It can also activate parts of the brain that control your emotions, thus providing relief for anxiety symptoms.

Some report immediate improvement after just one treatment, while others experience gradual relief over repeated sessions.

However, it is important to note that there is no one-fits-all treatment as anxiety can be caused by many things, and people often experience it to varying degrees. Chemical imbalances in the brain can cause anxiety, or symptoms of it. There are also theories that it could even be hereditary. What’s important is to establish what is the root cause(s) of the problem and to take the right steps to treat them.

What are the risks of acupuncture?

Acupuncture is generally safe and poses low risks if correctly done by a licensed practitioner. Ask around for a recommendation, or browse online for reviews before selecting one. Do have a thorough conversation with your acupuncturist who will review your medical history, lifestyle and diet to recommend the best treatment program.
