Is social media the new model scouting grounds?

If you love spamming your Instagram account with selfies (we’re all guilty of that) then you’ll be excited to hear that there are people who will appreciate your daily dose of narcissism, and we mean important people in the fashion industry like model agencies and fashion brands.

Instead of going through many challenges and fights to be a top model (Asia’s Next Top Model, anyone?), model fresh faces are now digitally scouted on social media platforms such as Instagram. Come to think of it, this method not only saves a lot of money and time but also opens up the opportunity worldwide – regardless where in the world you are located. For example, take Nadia Rahmat, our very own Singapore girl, who was one of the stylish few to be selected through #CastMeMarc, a social media casting by Marc Jacob, to star in the Marc by Marc Jacob S/S 2015 campaign. A local aspiring model in an international fashion ad campaign? Who would have imagined!

Apart from fashion labels, major modelling agencies such as IMG Models, which represents Karlie Kloss and Gisele Bundchen, have also turned to social media to scout for their talents. Titled We Love Your Genes, all the campaign requires is for you to hashtag your selfies with #WLYG. So ladies, it doesn’t matter if your hashtag game is strong, what matters is having the right one.

Who knows, you might be the next Elizabeth Jane Bishop, better known as “that tumblr girl”, who was also scouted on Instagram and is now represented by Elite Models, or the next Simone Holtznagel who was scouted by Paul Marciano to be one of Guess’ bombshell models.

So the next time you upload your selfie online, bear in mind that you’re also giving yourself the opportunity to be scouted as a model. Now, who says you need to be at the right place in the right time? Because all you really need is a social media account and some kickass selfies.
