Skin Type Concerns: Choosing An Appropriate Night Routine

Different skin types need different skincare routines, hence our editors share their skin type concerns and night routine, paired with some tips from our community to help you out with picking an appropriate one!

Skincare is essential to keeping your skin looking flawless and young. However, it is important to adjust your night routine to your individual skin type. There are four overarching skin types oily, dry, combination and sensitive, and before you start looking at purchasing skincare products you have to know what your skin type is. Here’s a quick quiz for you to determine your skin type. Once you’re sure of your skin type, it is time to find what skincare products you need!

Oily Skin: Moisturiser is a Must In Your Night Routine

Divya, our editor and Community Manager, has extremely oily skin. Here’s her night time routine to target her skin concerns!

divya's skincare

A cleanser should always be the first step in your skincare routine! Divya uses The Body Shop’s Tea Tree Skin Cleansing Facial Wash to cleanse her skin. As tea tree oil has healing and anti-inflammatory properties, this is great for her as it helps to both cleanse her skin of impurities and to keep pimples at bay.

Following a cleanser, Divya exfoliates her skin with the Hada Labo AHA/BHA exfoliator. For those with oily skin, a chemical exfoliator is the best choice for you when it comes to exfoliators. as physical exfoliators may be too abrasive and strip your skin of natural oils, which will cause even more oil production to overcompensate for lack of moisture.

A toner is next, and she uses the Simple Sensitive Skin Soothing Facial Toner just to ensure all dirt and excess oil is clear from her face, and moisturises with aloe vera gel after. Divya makes sure to apply a thick layer of it before going to sleep as it helps lock in moisture and not dry her skin out due to air conditioning.

You might have heard the ever-so-popular beauty myth that oily skin needs no moisturizer but that is not the case!
It is important to moisturise your skin in order for it to not over-produce natural oils. Gels are a good replacement if creams are too heavy for your skin.

Dry Skin: Hydration is key for your skin type

For dry skin, try products that have hyaluronic acid and ceramides in it! Hyaluronic acid helps to hold in moisture in our skin to keep it looking hydrated and plump, while ceramides help to retain moisture by forming a protective layer on our skin. With a combination of these products, be it in serums like the Lancome Clarifique Dual Essence or moisturisers, you should see improvement in your skin within weeks!

Masks are also great to replenish moisture in your skin! A tip by our member @st3p is to layer a cream base hydrating mask along with a hydrating sheet mask for an additional hydration boost!

Combination Skin: Have Products To Target Both Skin Type Concerns

Combination skin type requires you to target two issues: keeping your skin looking dewy but not oily. I fall prey to this skin type with an oily T-zone (forehead, nose, and chin) but dry and sensitive cheeks.

Breaking down combination skin to the two (or three) different skin types, here’s the night routine I follow to target my concerns.

min skincare

I double-cleanse with an Innisfree Green Tea Cleansing Oil to remove surface sebum and dirt on my face followed by the Mamonde Lotus Micro Cleansing Foam to really cleanse my face of the remaining impurities. It is important to keep your skin clean of impurities so it can fully absorb all the products you’ll be patting on.

Find out how to double cleanse here.

Next, I pat in Mamonde’s Chamomile Pure Toner into my face to help moisturise my skin and soothe the sensitive areas with the calming properties of chamomile. I’ve seen my skin less irritated with this product, and it helped to soothe my skin

A hydrating serum is next, where I use Innisfree’s Green Tea Serum. With its lightweight and hydrating properties, it keeps my sebum production at bay while moisturizing my dry areas. Finally, to lock in all the moisture, I use the Laneige Water Bank Moisture Cream EX.

Lastly, I spot-treat any pimples I have with tea tree oil at night and it usually disappears within a couple of days after!

Sensitive skin: Use hypoallergenic formula product for your routine

Avoiding parabens, fragrance, alcohol, dyes and non-essential chemicals in your skincare products will help to not irritate your skin. Our member @ezatul_amira also suggests using products that help to calm and repair skin barriers such as products that contain allantoin and centella asiatica.

Kiehls is a great brand for sensitive skin as many of their products are formulated with hypoallergenic formulas which will reduce chances of your skin being aggravated by the products. Simple is a good drugstore alternative as well, as their products are formulated for sensitive skin.

And that rounds up our skincare tips and our personal night routines for different skin types! And remember, like our member @miiraae._ says, ensure that your hands are clean before applying skincare products so you don’t put back dirt on your skin!
