Netflix Film #5: Work It

(work it - netflix originals)

My Rating: 3/5

If you loved watching Step Up movies, you might want to give this movie a go. This is a story about a girl who wants to get into her dream Ivy League school but realizes through the interview, that she has become a very boring person in order to become the perfect Ivy League school candidate. She convinces the interviewer that she is part of her school’s famous dance team and is an amazing dancer. However, she lied through her teeth and now has to prove to the interviewer that she indeed can dance. The only problem is that she cannot dance to save her life.

While the story is fairly straightforward with not many ups and downs or plot twists, it is a treat to watch Sabrina Carpenter learn how to dance from scratch, never giving up and realizing what actually makes her happy. Her best friend, played by Liza Koshy, is a really funny character that adds to the humour as well. But what I really liked about the movie is that it encourages kids to not be so focused on academics and actually find something to truly live for themselves.

Netflix Film #4: The Perfect Date

(The perfect Date Netflix)

My Rating: 3.8/5

The Perfect Date is about a boy who dreams of getting into Yale but does not have the money to attend the college. After a rich man pays him to be the date to his antisocial daughter for her prom, he realizes that he is pretty good at this and develops an app where he can offer his fake boyfriend services. Things are going great and he saves enough for Yale. However, he loses himself and his values in the process and has to figure out what really matters at the end of the day.

I really enjoyed the reversal of gender roles- it is a guy instead of a girl that creates an app to offer his services. Usually, we always see the girl using her sexuality to her advantage so it was interesting to see a guy do that for money instead. Apart from that, it is your very typical rom-com about a guy torn apart between the hot, perfect girl of his dreams or an ordinary girl next door that caught him by surprise. We all know who he is going to go for at the end. But the journey is entertaining to watch and perfect for those lonely Friday night watches.

Netflix Film #3: #RealityHigh

(#realityhigh netflix originals)

My Rating: 4/5

If you were a fan of the cult classic Mean Girls, then you will probably enjoy this movie as well. If Mean Girls was set during the times of social media, then it would probably be like this. This movie is about an ordinary, overachieving girl in high school who becomes best friends with the most popular girl who is actually, *surprise-surprise*, not a nice girl nor has her best interests.

The reason this movie takes 3rd place for me is because of its slightly more realistic portrayal of what it’s like to be a high school student in this day and age. Social media is a huge part of their lives and while it’s all fun and games, it can become a platform for bullying for so many kids. Although the movie is dramaticized and exaggerated, I feel it does touch on a lot of high school student’s experiences with real life issues that are not always picture-perfect.

Netflix Film #2: To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before

(To all the boys ive loved before netflix)

My Rating: 4.5/5

This one has an interesting storyline. It is about an average high school girl who writes letters to her crushes throughout her life but never has the guts to send them out. One day, her younger sister finds those letters and decides to send them out to all the boys she loved before. When she realizes her letters have been sent out as the boys approach her, she has to figure out how to manage this new-found attention in her life,

I really liked this movie because of the romantic drama aspect to it. There’s quite a bit of ups and downs the character faces and you get emotionally immersed in the romantic drama with her. Apart from the unique storyline, this movie also breaks away from the stereotypical portrayals. Korean-American teen girl is in the lead, the handsome jock boy is actually nice and sweet and not a bully and they show the importance of family and culture amongst Asians. You don’t get to see this often on an international platform.

Netflix Film #1: Always Be My Maybe

(always be my maybe netflix original)

My Rating: 5/5

This takes the number 1 spot for me of all the Netflix originals because of how simple yet complex the storyline is at once. On the surface, the story is about two childhood best friends who fall in love as teens and then fall apart due to misunderstandings. They get reunited after 15 years and have their own significant others. However, they realize their feelings have not faded for each other. If you dig beneath the surface, the story is more than just a love story. It is about personal ambitions, family issues, sacrifices and how love is not really enough sometimes when you come from two opposing backgrounds.

The movie has many moments of humour which makes digesting these serious issues easier and more enjoyable. You will also be able to relate with both the main characters and find yourself becoming a part of their life as you agree or disagree with the way they handle the situations. They are imperfect characters which is what makes them perfect as a couple and relatable with us.

So these are my top 5 Netflix Originals as of now. We also have a list of our team’s favourite movies on Netflix that are underrated, so check that out if you are looking for less mainstream movies to binge watch.

Let me know in the comments if you watched any of them. We would love to know what you thought about them.
