5 Minute Craft makeup hacks – you’ve probably seen at least one of them, whether you’re active on YouTube, Instagram or Facebook. With all the clickbait photos and well-edited videos, I’ve always been curious to see if they work, and hence, I tried and reviewed 5 of the hacks out today!
After trying out the trending eye makeup last month, I really wanted to try out new makeup hacks or trends. Hence, when I kept finding at least one video of 5-minute craft makeup hacks whenever I scroll through my social media pages, I knew this was a sign to try it out! Out of their millions of makeup hacks videos, I picked 5 hacks to test and see if it works. Did they actually work? Keep reading to see how it went!
Makeup Hack #1: Craft Your Own Brow Tweezers With Coins
As someone who loves to groom my own brows, I found this 5-minute craft makeup hack very interesting. It seemed really promising considering that it makes use of the same concept as a tweezer, to essentially help you pluck your eyebrows anywhere you are. All you need are three coins and that is all you need to try it out!
Efficacy: 0/5
Usefulness: 0/5
However, this hack didn’t work AT ALL. While the concept of it seemed like it had a chance to work, it didn’t even catch a single brow hair, not even the longer ones. Not to mention how difficult it was to get the three coins to be aligned well enough to mimic a brow tweezer. I might have weak hands, but in the 5 minutes I took to get the coins to hold properly, I ended up with a finger cramp. A before and after wasn’t needed at all since I didn’t manage to pluck out a single brow hair. Do not recommend this at all.
Makeup Hacks #2: Heated Eyelash Curler
I’ve seen the heated curler hack not just from the same 5-minute craft makeup hacks video as the previous hack, but also many makeup artists swear by this. Basically what you have to do, is to heat up your eyelash curler with your hairdryer before curling your brows.
Efficacy: 4/5
Usefulness: 4.5/5
For the heated eye curler, it was great for my stubborn eyelashes. Usually, my lashes barely curl up. But after using the heated curler, it curls up really nicely. As a tip, you need to be careful with how hot your curler is before using it on your eyes to not burn it.
Makeup Hack #3: Perfect Cut-Crease Using A Bottle Cap
When I saw this hack in the video, I was honestly really excited to try it out as having a proper cut crease was something I struggled with all the time (which is why I love halo eyes instead). Hence, I decided to grab myself a bottle cap and try it out.
Efficacy: 4/5
Usefulness: 3/5
I think this hack worked rather well, I was able to get a clean cut crease look with the bottle cap acting as a guide. However, I don’t think that the shape turned out the best but it could be due to my large bottle cap as opposed to a smaller one. I might give this another shot with other bottle caps but this is a 5-minute craft makeup hack that worked relatively well! For all of you trying to draw the perfect cut crease, do give this a shot!
Makeup Hack #4: Make your own lipstick with lip balm and eyeshadow
The next hack is to customise your own lipstick with just two simple products: a lip balm, and an eyeshadow. If you’ve ever found yourself struggling to find the perfect lipstick to match your eye makeup, this hack might be good for you! All you have to do is to first apply lip balm, then pat on your desired eyeshadow.
Efficacy: 3.5/5
Usefulness: 2/5
This worked out really well, the colour of my eyeshadow really popped on my lips, and it didn’t take much effort for me to pack on the colour. This hack is great for those who are looking for very specific colours that you usually won’t be able to find., But overall I don’t think it is worth the time to do it as, let’s be honest, our lipstick collection is probably the largest amongst our other makeup products. Hence, while it worked, I think just getting a nice lipstick from the store might be an easier choice.

Makeup Hack #5: Craft your own liquid highlighter
For this hack, all you have to do is mix in your concealer and highlighter. And since I recently cracked my Fenty highlighter, I decided to try this 5-minute craft hack out to make full use of the highlighter.
Efficacy: 4/5
Usefulness: 3/5
This hack works really well for those who want a soft and natural glow instead of a blinding highlighter look. I personally prefer to have a strong glow so this is why I rated it lower. My only issue with this hack is that you’ll need to have a concealer that is of lower coverage for the highlighter to shine through, or you’d have to use a lot of highlighters. And unless you have a cracked highlighter as I do, it can be quite heartbreaking to destroy your gorgeous highlighter every day. In all, I think it’s a nice hack to get your glow on naturally, but not really worth the effort with the number of natural highlighter options in the market.
And that is it for all of the 5-minute craft makeup hacks I have tried! I am honestly surprised by how many hacks actually worked out, as I’ve always been doubtful about the effectiveness of the hacks by 5-minute craft. My personal favourite is the heated curler for your eyelashes one as it really made a difference for my stubborn lashes, and the only one I’d include in my makeup routine.
However, through this experience, I would like to highlight the importance of being cautious when you are trying out these internet hacks. While the ones I’ve tried are considered the safer ones, I noticed many of the hacks the channel provided might be rather damaging to your skin especially with lack of instructions. Always keep your safety first!
