How To Take The Perfect Selfie In Just ONE Go! Our 5 Exclusive Tips

Taking the perfect selfie is a struggle we all can relate with too well. Let alone getting it right the first time round. However, being a beauty and makeup junkie, I post a bunch of selfies on my social media. Over time, I have learnt some tips and tricks to make the process much faster and I would love to share them with you.

You get dressed up, do your hair and have your makeup looking on point. You open up your front camera and suddenly, you look like a whole different person. You take 100 selfies and not 1 turns out to look good. That can bring your confidence down. However, many times, the problem is not you, but the external factors. In this article, I will be sharing with you how to take the perfect selfie in one go just by following these simple 5 tips!

Selfie Tip #1: Get The Lighting Right

The way the light falls on you and the way the light is distributed around you matters A LOT. Most of us would have a big open window in our rooms for natural lighting. However, standing smack right in front of the window will be too harsh on your face and blur out your features due to over exposure. You need to find the right spot in your room where the light is distributed just enough to make your face glowy and soft for the selfie.

On the left side, I was standing right in front of my window. You can see I have awkward shadows falling on me and my eyes don’t look as open because of the brightness. In the second picture, I stood a little behind the window where the light is more diffused and evenly distributed on my face with fewer shadows.

Selfie Tip #2: Even Out Your Skin Tone With Some Makeup

Our Asian skin tends to have discoloration and pigmentation issues. In pictures, they can be emphasised and make us look dull. If you want to rock your bare face, then go for it! However, if you are aiming to get that flawless, perfect selfie, put on a little bit of makeup to make your skin look more even and glowy. Don’t worry if you are not a makeup guru. You don’t even have to do your whole face of makeup, just work on these key features.

Skin – Use a BB or CC cream to even out your skin. If you want something with more coverage, get a foundation that is matte and long-lasting for that nice even texture.

My favourite CC cream is the IT cosmetics CC cream. It is like a cream and you can just use your fingers to apply it. It also has SPF in it which is always a bonus.

Eyebrows – They frame your face so make sure that they are nicely filled in

Eyelashes – If you have short eyelashes like me, they usually won’t be seen in pictures. So use your favourite curling mascara to coat them nicely

Cheeks- Add some warmth and definition to your face with a bronzer so that they don’t look flat in the light.

Lips: Moisturize and put on a tinted lip balm for a healthy looking lips.

Right side is me without any makeup and the left side is me with some makeup on. You can see the difference that makes for yourself. Minimal effort, maximum results.

Selfie Tip #3: Angles

Unless you are Kendall Jenner or Gigi Hadid with symmetrical features to make you look perfect from the front, front angles rarely ever work out for normal people like us. Our face is never symmetrical so taking pictures from the same level and up close might make your features look bigger than they are.

Try to pull your camera away from you and angle it a little higher and point it down. This creates the illusion that you have a sharper V-shaped face. It also shows more of your body so your face is not too much into the camera. Also tilt your face to the side just a little bit to give even more definition to your features.

On the left side, the camera is very close to my face and I am looking straight into it while on the right side I followed the technique above and you can see that I instantly look better in the second picture.

Selfie Tip #4: Accessorize It

I am not an accessories person but sometimes when I feel my face is not cooperating with me, I love to add a necklace or a pair of earrings to jazz up my selfie. I feel it adds a nice touch to the picture and also takes away the attention from your face a little bit in case you are having bad skin days.

The right side where I am wearing my classic hoop earrings makes me look more dressed up with minimal effort.

Selfie Tip #5: Set A Mood For Your Selfies

Your selfies don’t always have to be you looking straight into the camera. Sometimes, you can just let loose and have fun. Make different faces and laugh at yourself. This will add more character, movement and life into your picture and make it even more interesting to look at.

And That is it! Just follow these simple 5 steps and that is how you can take the perfect selfie at just one go. You can even use these tips for your at-home DIY photoshoots. But the most important tip that I would want you to take away from this is to be confident and love yourself for the way you are. Don’t try to be someone else. You are perfect the way you are and you are enough.
